Look how far we’ve come!

In the last 50 years, the world of video gaming has undergone a transformation that few of us could have ever imagined. What started with super simple pixelated games evolved (and is still evolving) into a professional e-sports industry. The trajectory of gaming owes its steep curve to technological innovation and the primal human urge to compete.

The 1970s brought us games like 'Pong'. A pioneer of its time, Pong was a simplistic tennis simulation game, with two-dimensional graphics that your parents will tell you were groundbreaking. This was the era of arcade gaming, where joystick maneuvering skills could earn you the title of the local arcade hero. The games may have been simple, but they laid the foundation for what was to come.

Fast forward to the late 1980s and early 1990s, and home consoles like Nintendo's NES and later, the Super NES, changed the dynamics massively. Gaming was no longer just limited to arcades - households worldwide were now able to play video games from the comfort of their living rooms. Many a sibling relationship was put to the test as families battled it out to reign supreme. Games like 'Super Mario Bros.' and 'The Legend of Zelda' were introducing more complex narratives and gradually increasing gameplay difficulty.

However, it was the advent of the internet and the subsequent ability for multiplayer gaming that revolutionised things into the kind of gaming we now know and love. Players from different parts of the world were suddenly able to compete and even join forces, laying the groundwork for the MORPG (Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games) genre. And with this explosion of technology, came the need for gamers to become more focussed, have quicker reactions and more stamina than ever before in order to achieve a competitive edge.

The early 2000s saw the birth of what we now so familiar with; e-sports. Competitive games began drawing stadium-sized crowds! Gamers started to be backed by coaches and analysts… players were not just players anymore; they were celebrities, with fans, significant prize money, and sponsorships. Elite gamers became akin to elite sports people with a global reach.

With the advancement of technology, game design has reached absolutely unprecedented heights. Open world games now offer amazing graphics and numerous subplots - they don’t just require skilled gameplay but also strategic planning, understanding of intricate game mechanics, and hours (and hours!) of commitment. Even mobile games have competitive leagues and tournaments.

The realm of video gaming has evolved from being a simple pastime to a highly competitive and often lucrative business. As technology continues to advance and games become even more intricate, we can only wait with bated breath to see where this incredible journey will take us next. One thing is for sure, though - the human spirit to compete, to challenge, and to conquer is a constant, whether it's on a pixelated tennis court or a vast, virtual battlefield.
